Step Six: Using LinkedIn

 

  1. Round-table discussion on setting up a LinkedIn profile

    • what were the of challenges setting up a profile?

    • what did you like about the process?
       

  2. Constructive feedback on LinkedIn profiles

    • if students are willing, view each person's profile and give feedback

    • suggest ways to improve clarity and flow

    • always write in the first person
       

  3. Discuss how to use LinkedIn to network

    • join groups (especially related to YFC)

    • participate in discussions

    • start your own discussions

    • post updates and comment on your contact's updates
       

  4. Discuss how to use LinkedIn to explore careers and jobs

    • in the jobs tab, enter job title or key words (like "advocacy" or "editor")

    • filter by location, company, etc

    • pay attention to job titles, required experience, desired skills, companies hiring

    • one you've selected a job listing, you can save it for later viewing

    • use this information to help you prepare yourself for YFC! (think back to Step Four and Five)
       

  5. Assignment for Step Seven: update your resume/CV

    • print out a copy of both for meeting seven

    • continue to use LinkedIn and update your profile -- this is a continuous process, you should update often and always try to improve!
